Statement by H.E. Mr. Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu Permanent Representative of Türkiye at the General Assembly Emergency Special Session (Ukraine)

Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu 02.03.2022
Mr. President,

We thank you for convening this historic emergency special session of the General Assembly.

A session that was called because the Security Council failed once again to fulfil its primary responsibility.

A session that was convened due to the unjustified, illegal and illegitimate act of aggression against a founding member of the United Nations by a permanent member of the very organ entrusted by the entire membership with preserving peace and security.

A session that was held as a result of the use of veto power by the very member that is perpetrating the aggression.

Mr. President,

We are obliged to reiterate: Russia’s ongoing military offensive against Ukraine blatantly violates the fundamental rules of international law, and the principles on which this august organization was founded.

Rules and principles that aim to prevent wars and protect mankind from disastrous consequences.

Consequences that we are unfortunately witnessing in and around Ukraine, due to Russia’s attacks.

The international community could not have been a spectator to such an act of aggression.

I am proud that as of today, it is not.

With today’s resolution, the United Nations emphasizes loud and clear that it stands against egregious violations of:

-the independence,

- sovereignty,

-territorial integrity, and

-and political unity,

of fellow Member States.

The membership is committed to preserving the letter and spirit of the fundamental constitutional document of our organisation - the Charter.

By adopting this resolution, the most democratic institution of the multilateral system denounces in the strongest possible terms - Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

We applaud the Member States who contributed to the collective endeavor that culminated in today’s outcome.

You have stood firm in upholding full respect for the UN Charter and preserving the rules-based international order.

We hope and trust that the calls and demands in this historic resolution will not fall on deaf ears.

This body must follow through with its decision.

Once again, we call on Russia to hear the demands of the global community and heed its own peoples’ pleas to:

stop its military operations,

withdraw all its forces from Ukraine,

reverse its decision regarding the areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, and its annexation of Crimea,

and return to diplomacy and dialogue without delay.

We also reiterate our call for an immediate humanitarian pause.

The peoples’ of the World hold their breath and wait with hope to see the march to the precipice halt. It is still not too late to go back to the negotiating table with serious engagement.

Mr President,

As a neighbour and friend of both the Russian and the Ukranian people, Türkiye stands ready to facilitate the peaceful settlement of this conflict.

Thank you.
