Statement by H.E. Mr. Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu Permanent Representative of the Republic of Türkiye, at Security Council Open Debate on the “Situation in the Middle East, Including the Palestinian Question”
Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu
28.10.2022
Madam President,
I thank you for convening this open debate, and also thank Special Coordinator Wennesland for his briefing.
We remain concerned with the lack of progress towards the solution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Equally frustrating is the lack of interest by the international community to find a just, lasting and comprehensive solution to this longest standing conflict on the United Nations agenda.
Unilateral actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory continue to undermine the prospects of a two-state solution. They also weaken the Palestinian Authority.
The situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is fragile.
The ongoing tension escalated by the recent raids and military blockades is a cause for serious concern.
Continuing violations against the sanctity and status of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque are unacceptable. These violations lead to further escalation.
The recent raids by radical Israeli groups on Al-Aqsa Mosque under the protection of Israeli security forces are unacceptable.
Madam President,
Unilateral actions and provocations trigger more violence in the region.
We call for restraint and common sense to restore calm.
These events remind once again the significance of addressing the root causes of this problem.
It is essential to return to the path of negotiations to make progress towards lasting peace and security.
Madam President,
We encourage all Palestinian groups to continue working towards unity and reconciliation.
We welcome the positive outcome of national reconciliation conference between Palestinian factions, held earlier this month under Algeria’s auspices.
The declaration adopted at the conference is a good basis for the unification of Palestinian factions.
We hope that the steps enlisted in the declaration, particularly the holding of elections are implemented.
Madam President,
Providing assistance to Palestine refugees is a joint responsibility of the international community.
UNRWA plays a vital role in that regard on behalf of all of us.
We strongly support the renewal of Agency’s mandate by the General Assembly in the coming weeks.
Yet the extension of mandate alone is not sufficient.
Ensuring Agency’s financial stability is also crucial for the continuation of its life-line services for millions of Palestine refugees.
We strongly encourage all to provide financial support to UNRWA.
For its part, Türkiye contributed 10 million dollars to the Agency this year, and also continues her in-kind contribution.
We also support the Secretary General’s call to increase assessed contributions to UNRWA from the UN general budget.
We are also ready to support our Palestinian brothers and sisters in their righteous request for full membership in this Organization.
Madam President,
Türkiye will continue to support all efforts towards finding a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Thank you.
