UN General Assembly Meeting on the “Situation of Human Rights of Rohingya and Other Minorities in Myanmar”
Sedat Önal
16.03.2023
Madam Vice-President,
I also associate myself with the statement of Saudi Arabia made on behalf of the OIC.
I would like to thank you for convening this timely meeting.
I also thank Special Envoy Heyzer for her briefing.
Two years after the coup, the situation in Myanmar remains grave.
We continue to call for steps for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar to ensure peace and stability in the country as well as protection of the civilian population.
The plight of the Rohingya Muslims should always remain high in the agenda of the international community.
While trying to find a sustainable solution to the crisis, we should simultaneously take steps to improve their living conditions.
We commend Bangladesh for undertaking the huge responsibility of hosting more than a million Rohingya.
Obviously, greater burden-sharing by the international community is called for.
On our part, we continue our relief efforts by supporting aid projects covering both urgent needs and income-generating activities.
Our field hospital in Cox's Bazar refugee camp provides health services to around 1.500 Rohingyas on a daily basis.
We support the efforts of the Secretary General’s Special Envoy in close coordination with the ASEAN and the OIC.
The adoption of Security Council Resolution 2669 is important in terms of underscoring the need to address the root causes of the crisis in Rakhine State, and to create conditions necessary for the voluntary, safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees and internally displaced persons.
Türkiye remains committed to supporting international efforts aimed at finding an enduring solution to the Rohingya crisis.
Thank you.
