Madam President,
Distinguished Delegates,
I extend my gratitude to the President of the General Assembly for convening this important session.
Violence against women and girls remains an alarming global challenge. Despite progress, its persistence across societies undermines efforts toward equality, human dignity, and sustainable development.
Türkiye remains steadfast in its commitment to combating violence against women through a zero-tolerance approach. Legal reforms, strategic frameworks, and comprehensive services underpin our efforts to address this grave issue.
The Law on the Protection of Family and Prevention of Domestic Violence against Women is a cornerstone of our legal framework, complemented by the Turkish Penal Code amendments enacted in May 2022.
Our recently launched Strategy Document and 4-year Action Plan for the Empowerment of Women and the Presidential Circular on Combating Violence Against Women outline actionable and measurable steps to strengthen national and local initiatives.
These efforts are coordinated through robust mechanisms such as the Committee on Monitoring Violence against Women and the Coordination Board for Combating Violence against Women, which ensure systematic and data-driven responses.
On the ground, Violence Prevention and Monitoring Centres operate across all 81 provinces, providing tailored services to victims.
Women's shelters offer critical protection and support for those affected by all types of abuse.
To enhance accessibility and local effectiveness, district-level contact points have also been established nationwide.
Mme President,
The nexus between armed conflict and the disproportionate suffering of women and girls remains a grave concern. In conflict zones, women often bear the heaviest burdens, experiencing heightened vulnerabilities to violence, displacement, and economic deprivation.
The continued crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, and beyond demand collective attention. In these regions, the rights and safety of women and girls are acutely jeopardized.
Women and girls in Afghanistan face unprecedented restrictions on their fundamental rights and freedoms, including access to education, employment, and public life. These systemic constraints not only jeopardize their futures but also undermine the broader socio-economic stability and development of the country. The international community must prioritize efforts to safeguard their rights and amplify their voices. Addressing the rights, safety and needs of women and girls must be central to any peacebuilding and humanitarian response.
Türkiye will continue to work tirelessly to advocate for the elimination of violence against women and girls, ensuring their inclusion and empowerment in all aspects of life.
I thank you.
