Statement by Türkiye Security Council Meeting on Sudan

Ahmet Yıldız 19.12.2024
Mr. President,

I thank briefers Director Wosornu, Ms. Lewis and Mr. Bahr el Din for their valuable statements.

The armed conflict in Sudan, in its second year, has become a humanitarian catastrophe.

Recent figures point out to a dire situation where over 11 million people are displaced, hundreds of thousands have lost their lives.

Due to the conflict, vital infrastructure including many health facilities have been destroyed.

Türkiye is extremely concerned by the humanitarian crisis and the continuation of the conflict.

Building on the long and deep-rooted relations with Sudan and its people, Türkiye gives utmost importance to Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence from outside interference.

We support all sincere efforts by the international community in alleviating the suffering of Sudanese people and scaling up humanitarian aid.

In this vein, Türkiye continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people. 3 Turkish aid ships have recently arrived at Port Sudan, delivering approximately 8 thousand tons of humanitarian aid.

Moreover, the Turkish hospital in Nyala, the capital city of South Darfur, continues to operate despite trying conditions.

Our continued presence in Port Sudan at an ambassadorial level is a clear testament to our determination to stand with the government and people of Sudan.

Mr. President,

Security, stability and prosperity of Africa have become even more fragile with the overarching effects of current global crises.

Finding long-lasting solutions is only possible if the internal and external root causes are properly addressed.

Therefore, in order to help the Sudanese people, we must focus on the causes of the disease, not the symptoms alone.

The fighting in Sudan has to stop immediately.

In the midst of increasing global crises and challenges, we should not let Sudan slip away from the attention of the international community and act together to convince the parties to a negotiated solution.

Unfortunately, the prospects for ending the conflict gets dimmer each passing day, unless a new understanding is adopted to communicate with the government in Port Sudan.

We support the elements in the Jeddah Declaration as essentials in the way to ending this conflict.

Therefore, we stand with the Sudanese Government’s principled approach on defining Jeddah Declaration as the main point of reference for the way ahead.

Mr. President,

Türkiye has mobilized its resources to support African countries’ desire for lasting peace, genuine democracy, sustainable development and welfare.

As a strategic partner of the African Union, we have built a holistic, inclusive and equal partnership on the basis of mutual respect.

Deepening relations in all levels has resulted in a mutual trust, which paved the way for mediation efforts to address the disagreements among African countries.

Building on this experience, we are ready to contribute further to the stability and security in East Africa by initiating or taking part in all political processes along with our humanitarian activities in Sudan.

President Erdoğan conveyed Türkiye’s determination and readiness in this regard to the Head of the Sudan’s Sovereignty Council President Burhan during his recent phone call.

I would like to reiterate Türkiye’s call on both sides to exert utmost restraint to prevent further bloodshed and harm to civilians.

We therefore urge the international community to expand efforts not only to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, but also the political challenges facing the country.

Mr. Madam President,

The people of Sudan deserve to be saved from the grasp of violence and death, by putting aside concerns and interests that lead to despair.

Türkiye reaffirms its strong support to the people of Sudan and calls on the international community the need to increase humanitarian aid efforts as well as mediation efforts on the political front.

I thank you.

Atatürk
